Week 1: September 5

Introductory Assignment:
-Early Memories: In kindergarten, I remember various snippets like bringing in my birthday treat (iced animal crackers), celebrating the red wings stanley cup victory with pretzels, oreos, and red pop, and missing valentines day because i had pink eye.
-Songs I recall singing: Barney
-Performances: Choir in 5th grade, School plays in k-5
-Desert Island: Tenth Avenue North
-Other people like: Adele, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Manaj 
-Last 24 hours: How Great Thou Art
-Puzzles: Screamo
-Guilty Pleasures: Party music

Notes:

-Chants have rhythm (ba, ba, ba) and songs have rhythm, but also tone. Rhythm is the base of a song. 

The differences in songs come from several factors.
-Tempo:quickness, slowness of beat (pulse)
-Octives: how high you start
-style differences
-mood association
-major/minor

Why is music education important?
-its a part of our society
-for some students, it is the best way they learn (multiple intelligences)
-provides way for parents and kids to interact
-for some students, it is their only hook into school

Music Aptitude: the potential to learn music
-stabilizes at age 9
-but can always still practice and improve
-early exposure affects aptitude (parents, recordings, games instruments, timbre)
-movement highly connected to music, elevates aptitude

Musical ability develops similarly to language
-hear words over and over, develop image with words
-songs don't have clear meaning but will develop one
-exposure! exposure! exposure!
-listen to music then read, listen to words, then read
-brain synapses, more exposure=more connections

Ukulele 

-body, sound hole, neck, fingerboard, frets
-frets numbered, 1 is furthest away, dots on 5th, 7th, 12th
-strings numbered, 4-1 from top to bottom
-inverted tuning
